Pollution that goes directly in the ocean affects ocean organisms and indirectly affects human health and resources. Toxic wastes are poisonous materials that are being dumped in to the ocean. Boating pollution is the pollution that comes from the boats very big engine when it is running and it pollutes the water, killing animals with the chemicals in the exhaust from the very big engine. Wastewater is run-off from rainwater and usually ends up in rivers lakes, or oceans. Whenever even a small amount of pollution gets into the ocean, it ruins the environment.

There are three kinds of oil and gas accidents. They are caused by equipment breaking down, people making mistakes and natural disasters like hurricanes and earthquakes. Many accidents happen during drilling. Accidents happen during transporting the oil in tankers which run into reefs, beaches or other tankers. Pipelines to carry the oil might also leak.

a little good of information

Oil spills hurt bird's flight abilities, making it difficult or impossible to find food and escape from predators. By observing the thickness of the film of oil and its appearance on the surface of water, it is possible to estimate the quality of oil spilled. The floating oil slicks put the shore line at particular risk when they eventually come ashore. One ton of crude oil is equal to 308 U.S gallons or 7.33 barrels. Habitats of plants and animals may be at risk from oil spills.

This article has some graphs that show many different problems in the oil pollution area. In 1973, there were 600 natural seeps and 259 natural seeps in 1990. This shows that oil pollution can happen naturally. There was 300 tanker accidents in 1973 & 1979, but in 1990 there were 0. So new laws must be helping boats be safer. Don't ever think of going on a ship that has more than 1 gallon of oil on it because it is really bad for the environment.
